Carrabelle Library Fulfills Carolyn’s Dream
Carolyn Sparks saw the library in Carrabelle as a learning opportunity both inside and out. She always wanted a garden on the library grounds, but your standard shrubs were not what she had in mind. Instead Carolyn wanted a garden that would attract children and butterflies. She wanted a garden that would honor those who served our country. She wanted a garden that would mirror the environment of Florida and teach all of Franklin County about the importance of native plantings.
Florida native plants are plants that have grown in our back yard since before Columbus. They are especially suited to our climate because they have been here so long - they thrive in heat and humidity. They grow well in our soils and require little to no watering other than what rainfall supplies. One of the features of Carolyn’s Garden is that it will not use potable water once the plantings have been established. It will not require fertilizer either, as the plants are adapted to our nutrients.
Sea Oats Garden Club is proud to announce that a fund has been established to pursue the garden dream in memory of Carolyn Sparks.  Florida Friendly Landscaping is the basis for the garden’s design. Design assistance is being provided by the Gulf of Mexico Alliance Environmental Education Network . Two Cracked Pots Nursery  (370.6996)  has offered assistance as well.  The Sea Oats Garden Club will provide most of the labor. Already two red maples have been donated which will be planted near the flag pole.  They will provide shade and a great place to rest when the bench, which is also planned for that area, is installed.
Carolyn’s Garden needs your support!  Tonia Granger has a list of plants that are needed and a diagram of where they belong in the garden. Donations are gratefully accepted. For more information please call 850.697.2366 or 239.404.4137.
