Federal stimulus funds save 41 jobs at FAMU – until next year

Forty-one employees at Florida A&M University will soon get letters saying their jobs are safe for now, thanks to a new funding source — federal stimulus money.

The letter puts an expiration date of June 30, 2010, on those employees' jobs, and they will be placed on a revised contract, administrators say.

The temporary nature of these otherwise permanent jobs, unveiled Wednesday, served as the most recent update regarding the $16.2 million budget cuts at FAMU.

The university's board of trustees approved the 2009-2010 cuts last week. However, they didn't clarify what jobs are likely to be eliminated until Wednesday.
