Dart throwers use skills to raise money for animals

Dart enthusiasts showed up Sunday at the Tallahassee Elks Lodge to raise money for the Big Bend Disaster Animal Responder Team. By Sunday evening, about 20 dart players had participated, helping to raise several hundred dollars.

"Most dart players play for the money, but today it's for charity," said Lyle Herrick, who has been playing darts for more than 20 years. Herrick was ready to test his skills to help some animals.

"I'm an animal lover to start with," he said.

The Tallahassee Area Dart Association and Big Bend Disaster Animal Response Team (DART) held the tournament to raise money for the animal-support organization.DART rescues animals displaced during disasters and houses them until they are returned to their owners.

"I thought the two things matched up pretty well," laughed tournament coordinator Kelli Dougherty.

A clinic was held for beginning throwers. Throughout the afternoon contestants could buy darts to throw at the "chance board" where they could win prizes.
