Tallahassee Memory Care is positioned as a comfortable home for residents, where staff members are merely visitors. Founded in September 2008, the facility has worked hard to keep the focus on the individual needs of each resident. One staff member in particular, Matt Spence, has helped run the facility even through the construction phases as executive director—and administrator-in-training—and believes in its mission to serve.
Born and raised in Savannah, Georgia, Matt jumped into the healthcare industry immediately after high school. He accepted a position with Kindred Healthcare and served the nursing home as maintenance director for four years. Although he enjoyed his work, Matt took a break to pursue law enforcement. It didn’t take him long to realize life as a police officer was not for him. As a result, Matt became a regional life safety inspector and traveled to different facilities. During that time, he came across Broadview Assisted Living in Tallahassee and was offered a position. Matt happily accepted the job and has spent the last two years with the company, which also owns Tallahassee Memory Care, located in another area of town.
Tallahassee Memory Care specializes in supporting individuals with Alzheimer’s and other related dementias. To ensure the best possible care, staff members participate in quarterly training and are therefore fully equipped to assist the residents. Matt emphasizes that unlike some facilities that appear institutional-like, Tallahassee Memory Care looks like a cottage from the outside, and feels like a home on the inside. It is important to staff members that each resident receives personalized, one-on-one care and is comfortable in his/her surroundings. A myriad of services and activities are provided, but all are tailored to the special needs of the residents.
Just as Tallahassee Memory Care aims to serve its residents, the facility contributes to the community as well. Matt explains that they participate in any way they can. When it first opened in September, the facility sponsored Cops for Kids, which benefits the boys and girls club. In addition, the facility has done bake sales for local churches, offered coffee and treats for senior days at Publix and more.
Matt feels blessed to work in such a rewarding environment. Though he started in the maintenance side of healthcare, he really grew to love the industry through his interactions with residents. Today, he enjoys assisting and spending time with those at Tallahassee Memory Care, and explains that fond memories are constantly developing. He looks forward to seeing the facility grow in the future and continue to serve its residents and the community.
