Kids often say they want to be a doctor when they grow up, but for Susan Whaley, this childhood dream became a reality. Always interested in medicine, she recognized a particular fascination with eyes and decided to pursue optometry. Dr. Whaley has been serving patients for 16 years and is owner of Tallahassee Eye Center.

Native to St. Petersburg, Dr. Whaley received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Central Florida and her doctorate from the University of Houston College of Optometry. She spent eight years working in general optometry for a private practice in Orlando before making Tallahassee her permanent home. Wanting her children to grow up near their grandparents, she and her husband, Brian, decided to move to Tallahassee to be closer to his family. With her own private practice, Tallahassee Eye Center, she has served the community’s eye needs since the year 2000.

Tallahassee Eye Center is a complete eye care provider. The practice offers eye examinations for adults and children, contact lens fittings, treatment and management of ocular disease, and a full service optical department with a variety of eyewear options. Dr. Whaley explains that as cliché as it may sound, outstanding customer service truly is their priority. She recognizes that every patient has specific eye care problems and therefore customizes solutions depending on the individual needs. She emphasizes her willingness to bend over backwards for her customers, allowing them to try on even 50 lenses if necessary. Attention to detail is valued heavily at the practice.

When she is not helping patients, Dr. Whaley enjoys her duties as full time mom. She has a daughter and son and is actively involved in their lives. In her spare time, she enjoys singing and playing the flute. She is also an active member of Wildwood Presbyterian Church, the Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce, and serves on the board at Lighthouse.

Dr. Whaley finds her job rewarding on a daily basis. She enjoys helping people transition from glasses to contacts or even helping them see for the first time. She is also excited about the growth of Tallahassee Eye Center and looks forward to many years of practicing optometry.
