Take Care Nutrition Counseling: helping improve health now and in the future
With the education and work experience to back up her heart for health, Dr. Leah Gilbert-Henderson founded Take Care Nutrition Counseling in August 2008. Since then, she has met and helped patients in Tallahassee and the surrounding areas improve their overall wellbeing.
Native to Quincy, Florida, Dr. Leah received her PhD in Nutrition Science from the University of Tennessee and later moved to Michigan and Indiana to work on post-doctoral fellowships. She then returned home and became a full time dietician at Tandem Health Care of Tallahassee. After 14 years of service in the subacute hospital/long term care facility, she decided to start her own private practice where she could more personally serve patients in need.
Through her business, Dr. Leah counsels on weight loss, prevention of chronic disease, geriatric nutrition, chewing and swallowing problems and overall wellness for individuals of all ages. She explains that her key to success is keeping up with the latest knowledge; however, her patients most appreciate her support, empathy and ability to relate to them. With convenience in mind, Dr. Leah serves her patients from multiple locations. She has a facility in Tallahassee and in Thomasville and also meets in public spaces with Wi-Fi if patients prefer.
When she is not working one-on-one, Dr. Leah teaches a diabetes class at the Tallahassee senior center once a month and also does other talks on wellness programs when asked. She has also co-written a cookbook entitled “Soft Foods for Easier Eating” to help people with chewing and swallowing problems.
Dr. Leah emphasizes her love for what she does because she feels she is making a big difference in patients’ lives. Her counseling helps people live better now but also allows for more independence and functionality in the future.
