Gibbs and Culpepper Tree Service: meeting any and all tree needs
Sometimes being in the right place at the right time can make a profound difference in an individual’s career path. This sentiment applies directly to Clay Culpepper, president of Gibbs and Culpepper Tree Service for two and a half years, in his own transition from accountant to business owner.
Gibbs and Culpepper Tree Service has been meeting Tallahassee residents’ tree needs since 1995. In 2006, though, the owner was looking to get out of the business; simultaneously, Clay was looking to acquire his own company. As Clay used to be an accountant for the business, he and the owner were still friends. They met for lunch one day and realized they both had needs that the other could fulfill; Clay, lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time, jumped on the opportunity to purchase the company and has been enjoying life as his own boss in the tree industry ever since.
Although he was born in Alabama, Clay has lived in Tallahassee since he was five years old. After taking classes at Tallahassee Community College for a few years, he returned to his native state to complete his college degree. He received a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from the University of Alabama in 1998 and then once again returned to Tallahassee to get his master’s in Tax Accounting from Florida State University. In 1999, he started working as an accountant for Lanigan and Associates and eventually moved on to become a CFO at Allstate Construction. In 2006 he was ready to own his own business.
At Gibbs and Culpepper Tree Service, Clay assures there is nothing his company can’t do in regard to trees. Services offered include tree removal, pruning, hauling, fertilizing, land clearing, tree mitigation, stump grinding, burning and brush mowing, selling firewood, consulting about tree needs and more. Clay takes pride in more than just the variety of services offered, though. The company staffs three Arborists and has over one million dollars of general liability and worker’s compensation insurance. In addition, Clay and his employees have the upmost respect for their customers and always make sure to fully clean up after completing a job. Customer referrals are imperative to the success of the company, and thus outstanding customer service is always a priority.
Clay also makes sure his company serves the community as a whole. He and his employees are active participants in “Christmas Connection,” where they deliver presents to disadvantaged families. Currently, they are also donating demolition, land clearing, and hauling services to build a home for a needy family in Tallahassee. Clay also finds time to personally serve the community; to name a few of his contributions, he is an active member of his church and provides services for Leon county schools and churches. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family, which consists of a wife of 10 years and their three young sons. He also loves hunting, fishing, tennis, golf and Alabama football.
Though Clay has only owned Gibbs and Culpepper Tree Service for a few years, he looks forward to seeing his company grow. He has a true interest in making a difference in his employees’ lives and taking customer service to a new level in the tree care industry.
